Community centre in Cromer handed a £2,500 boost thanks to Central England Co-operative

A centre that acts as a hub for a range of community activities has been given a funding boost from Central England Co-operative.

Cromer Community Centre has used a grant from the Eastern Membership and Community Council to improve the provision it offers to young people, as well as increasing sustainability and decreasing energy consumption.

The £2,500 from the Society was used to upgrade the main hall lighting to energy efficient LED lighting.

The centre also received funding support from the Big Society Fund, Norfolk Community Association, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, Cromer Town Council, Corner House Dental Practice and the Wherrymen.

A total of over £25,000 was spent to upgrade the community centre. Plans are now in place to raise a further £35,000 to upgrade the toilets, kitchen and entrance hall at the centre.

Phil Harris, from the centre, said: “This grant has been used in a bid to help attract youth to the new community centre in Cromer.

“The former Women's Institute has been taken over by the community to broaden the range of services at the venue, guaranteeing the future provision by making the venue more sustainable.

“The centre’s management committee would like to thank all the people and organisations that have funded and helped this project.”

The decision to back the grant comes as Central England Co-operative installs LED lighting across its Food Stores and Petrol Filling Stations as part of ongoing
environmental commitments.

Karen Ball, Member and Community Relations Officer, said: “The Co-operative has a long tradition of giving back to the community, and we welcome the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives and education of local people.

“It is really important to have strong links with the local community and I am proud the Eastern Membership and Community Council were able to support Cromer Community Centre.”
