Barbecues – How To Go Beyond the Burger

Posted by Rob Smyth | 06/07/2018 | Category: Food

Given the unpredictability of the British weather, when we are blessed with a sunny day, barbecuing tends to be an impromptu affair. The unplanned nature of al fresco cooking means we can end up seeing the usual suspects on our plates – burgers, sausages, or perhaps some chicken. That’s fine, but if you want to get beyond the burger, you need a tried-and-tested array of tasty recipes to call on, which will surprise and delight family and friends and encourage them to come back for more.

Believe it or not, you can offer an imaginative and healthy three-course meal straight from the grill.

Start with Prosciutto wrapped Galia Melon, Onion Marmalade & Gem Hearts. Watch this video to see how easy it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLMT0m5bJoA

To follow it up, for the main course you could try Tequila and Lime King Prawns with Vanilla and Lime Roasted Sweet Potatoes. Feast your eyes on our video for the next minute or so and see how you can create something really special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66Q8aNYi4FA

If your idea of a barbecued dessert is toasting a few marshmallows, it’s time to add some finesse to your menu straight from the fire.  Make the most of in-season summer fruits and with just a little preparation you could be serving up Honey Glazed Roasted Peaches & Nectarines, Mascarpone & Pistachio Praline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gq79M--wpzs

Alternatively, if you want something you can prepare quickly before everyone arrives, this recipe for Rhubarb Fool is perfect for summer and makes a tangy finale to your open-air spread: https://www.centralengland.coop/food/recipes/desserts/gluten-free-rhubarb-fool

Whatever you’re serving, make sure you have drinks on hand for your guests to enjoy while they take in the sight, sound and smells of your gourmet garden cooking. You can discover all of our current deals on drinks available in store at https://www.centralengland.coop/deals/drinks
