Central England Co-operative launch the Great Round Pound Hunt to raise money for charity

From 15 October this year the ‘round pound’ will no longer be legal tender. After this date the coin cannot be spent in any stores in the UK, as it will be completely replaced by the new hexagonal-shaped pound coin which came into circulation this March.

Central England Co-operative is encouraging everyone to hunt for their round pounds now and to put them to good use by donating them to the charity Dementia UK who the Society chose to support as its corporate charity earlier this year. Dementia UK has specialist Admiral Nurses, all highly trained to help those living with dementia and their families. The charity provides vital support seven days a week, and is a lifeline for many people.

No matter how hard people look, there will always be a couple of old coins left behind that turn up after the deadline on 15 October. Since shopping with them will no longer be an option, Central England Co-operative is encouraging everyone to continue to donate any they find in store and support Dementia UK. Support is desperately needed to recruit additional nurses to the service as calls to the helpline alone have increased by 50% in the last year.

To make the Great Round Pound Hunt a success, Central England Co-operative has come up with a list of the obvious and the not-so-obvious places to look for those elusive old coins.

  • Under the sofa cushions
  • In the car
  • Clothes in the wardrobe
  • Washing machine trap
  • Money boxes
  • Purses, wallets, old handbags
  • Drawers
  • Jars of change
  • Gym bag
  • Suitcases and travel bags

Successful round pound hunters can simply visit their local Central England Co-operative store and pop them into the Dementia UK collection tins.
