CENTRAL ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE’S DISTRIBUTION CENTRE GEARS UP FOR THE GREAT BRITISH SUMMER

Central England Co-op’s distribution hub in Leicester is geared up for the summer season as 69,000 tonnes of food and drink pass through the facility on the way to 240 stores across 16 counties. This huge weight is the equivalent of:

•    5,574 double decker buses
•    138,808 camels
•    11,567 African elephants
•    40,826 Ford Fiestas

A dedicated team of 170 colleagues at the Society’s Chilled Distribution Centre have been preparing for the summer months since Easter to make sure that shelves are fully stocked with everything a family would need for a fantastic summer.

Operating seven days a week, the Chilled Distribution Centre receives, picks and delivers over:

•    320,000 bags of sweet and crunchy pre-packed salad
•    348,000 cucumbers
•    375,000 burgers
•    143,000 punnets of raspberries
•    135,000 punnets of strawberries
•    78,000 tubs of double cream
•    38,000 packs of chicken barbecue drumsticks
•    42,000 Melton Mowbray pork pies

Lee Dundee, Chilled Distribution Centre Manager, said: “The Chilled Distribution Centre is pretty busy all year round. Our peaks are very much summer, Christmas and Easter, and as the summer starts to get into full swing we are working constantly to make sure that customers can get the products they want from our stores.”

The hard work will continue for colleagues as summer winds down and preparation will begin for the Christmas season straight away.
