A community group is set to spruce up a well-used canal towpath in Stafford after being handed a payout from Central England Co-operative’s Community Dividend Fund.

Baswich Canal Group secured a grant of £2,000, with a total of £52,000 handed out to 26 good causes across 16 counties.

The money will be used to re-surface part of a towpath along a stretch of the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal in Stafford.

The group will use the cash to pay for the materials needed and then volunteers will work to re-surface the towpath.

John Potter, Baswich Canal Group leader, said: “We are over the moon to know that we can now make significant progress with the new towpath surface.

“We are now able to get the Canal and River Trust to order a quantity of road stone so we can continue to improve the towpath from a muddy and uneven path to an all-weather surface for all users to enjoy.

“We are hoping that this grant will enable another 500 metres or so to be so upgraded.

“Receiving this is an enormous boost to our project and will give great encouragement to our volunteers.”

Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are handed out every three months to a wide range of applicants.

The fund guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive across its trading area of 16 counties from the Midlands to the east coast.

Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend scheme.”

People can apply for funding by visiting https://communities.centralengland.coop/ or heading in store to pick up an application form.

Potential applicants have to have been a Central England Co-operative member for six months, the project should be in the trading area of a Central England Co-
