Central England Co-operative has spent £500,000 on three new-look food stores in Yorkshire – with 100 lucky shoppers walking away with an array of prizes as part of a special golden ticket away.

The major investment in the county has resulted in former Wooldale Co-operative stores being revamped in Wooldale Road, Holmfirth, Holmfirth Road, New Mill, and Springwood Road, Thongsbridge, offering a wide range of products and services to meet the needs of local residents.

All three installations have included the latest in pioneering new energy efficient refrigeration technologies to minimise environmental impact and LED lighting.

The opening day event comes after Board and management of Central England Co-operative and Wooldale Co-operative decided to join forces to strengthen the
local offering for Wooldale Co-operative customers and members.

Wooldale Co-operative Society has a long history in the local area, stretching back over 130 years , and 40 colleagues across its three Food Stores have been transferred to Central England Co-operative.

To mark the opening of the new stores, dozens of customers queued outside to take part in the special golden ticket giveaway and walked away with everything from a 50” TV and a barbecue to Co-operative gift vouchers and Irresistible Fairtrade chocolate bars.

Emma Simpson scooped the television after unwrapping her golden ticket at New Mill, with Barry Robinson walking away with the top prize in Thongsbridge and
Gillian Gainsborough at Wooldale.

Emma said: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened the envelope and it said I had won a television.”

Pupils from nearby Wooldale Junior School were on hand as the special guests to cut the ribbon and announce the store officially open.

Ian Booth, New Mill Central England Co-operative Store Manager, said:  “Our team were so excited to finally allow our members and customers to see our new-look store.”

Thongsbridge Central England Co-operative Store Manager Simon Robert said: “The store looks fantastic and already customers have been making many positive comments about how it looks and the different products and services now available.”

Michael Holmes, Holmfirth Store Manager, said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank customers for their patience during the revamp. We hope everyone will enjoy the store as much as we do.”

“All of us at the three new Co-operative food stores are proud to be part of such a great community and are looking forward to welcoming customers, new and old, to come and enjoy our food store.”

Both New Mill and Thongsbridge Co-operative food stores will be open from 7am to 9pm every day.

The Holmfirth Co-operative food store will open 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 9pm on Sunday.

The stores offer a wide range of products from everyday necessities to something a little more special.

This offer includes fresh and local fruit and vegetables, an in-store bakery offering breads and pastries, chilled beers and wines, fresh and frozen product, Irresistible product ranges, and a great selection of food to go.

The stores also offer Paypoint, Collect Plus, foreign currency, a free cash machine and lifesaving defibrillators.

Becoming a member of Central England Co-operative offers a whole host of benefits ranging from collecting points every time you spend in store to earn a share of the profits, access to members activities and community initiatives including the Community Dividend Fund, which hands out grants of up to £5,000 to charities and good causes across the Society’s trading estate.
