Central England Co-operative can today reveal that it has helped change the lives of 28 groups and charities in Leicestershire – by donating over £53,000 from its Community Dividend Fund in 2017.

A diverse range of projects were handed a funding boost during the past 12 months, with the largest single amount given being £5,000.

In total, 122 organisations spread out across 16 counties shared a funding pot of £209,000.

In Leicestershire, Saint Aidan’s Community Hall, in New Parks, was handed the maximum grant of £5,000 to help pay for a new roof at the facility after it was revealed that without the work the future of the centre and the groups that operate from it could have been in jeopardy.

Father Simon Lumby, who is part of the hall’s management committee, said: “Everyone here at Saint Aidan’s was so very grateful to Central England Co-op for the grant that has meant that our community hall can stay open.

“The grant was needed for essential repairs to the roof that, had they gone unheeded, would have meant the closure of the only flexible community space on an estate that serves nearly 17,000 people.

“The value of this grant to us is almost incalculable in terms of its worth to the hundreds of people who use the hall week by week.”

Ratby Allotments Association received £4,500 for raised beds that will be used to help less able-bodied residents to take part in gardening activities.

The Hero Project, based in Coalville, used £3,300 to buy an outdoor pizza oven and ingredients to help youngsters learn more about where food comes from.

Danielle Fern, from the Hero Project, said: “The funds have gone towards a pizza oven and co-operative foods.

“The project is about going around local schools and doing a pizza club, which will involve different activities such as how to grow "pizza" plants.

“This will have a massive impact on our local area in a good way.”

Everyone from schools and churches to support groups and volunteer organisations benefited from the fund that guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive from the Midlands to the East Coast.

Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “We have handed out £209,000 to projects in our communities in 2017 - with £53,500 of that being right here in Leicestershire.

“The Community Dividend Fund reflects a key principle of our society, in that we reward the loyalty of our customers by investing in and supporting local communities.

“The scheme helps to benefit a wide variety of projects, with grants between £100 to a £5,000, which will make the communities that we serve a better place for our members to live, work and visit.

“I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend Fund scheme.”
