Two groups in Northamptonshire have unwrapped an early Christmas present after sharing over £1,000 in the latest payout from Central England Co-operative’s Community Dividend Fund.

A wide range of projects from across the area shared the festive funding boost of £1,447, with a total of £51,000 handed out to 30 good causes across 16 counties.

Whyte Melville Bowling Club, based in Moulton, has been handed £1,000 for new bowls equipment.

A total of £447 will be used by Hargrave Singers, in Wellingborough, to pay for a new keyboard and music sheets, which will be then used to entertain lonely and vulnerable people during the festive season.

Pat Worden, musical director, said: “We are delighted to receive a Community Dividend Fund grant from Central England Co-op.

“As a small community choir we meet weekly in members’ homes and sing for the enjoyment it brings. We are also privileged to perform at a number of community events in the locality.

We are a small group and really appreciate the grant which will help us to buy music to extend our repertoire and a keyboard which will enable us to continue rehearsing, improving and entertaining the community.”

Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are handed out every three months to a wide range of applicants.

The fund guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive across its trading area of 16 counties from the Midlands to the east coast.

Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend scheme.”
