Worshippers in Burton set to enjoy a boost thanks to Central England Co-operative

A church in Burton has received a welcome boost after being handed a payout from Central England Co-operative’s Community Dividend Fund.
St Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Mount Street, Winshill, applied for the funding in a bid to pay for vital repair work.
It was awarded £2,500 from the fund alongside 34 other good causes across 16 counties - a total of £57,000 was handed out.
A recent health and safety risk assessment at both sites highlighted the need to install electrical emergency lighting and the reconfiguration of several doors that are fire exit routes.
Jim Baxter, speaking on behalf of the churches, said: “We are most grateful for the support given by the Community Dividend Fund.
“Our church buildings need to be modernised like any other property and the generous contribution from the Central England Co-operative Community Dividend Fund helps the parishioners in their continued efforts to ensure that these identified modernisation projects are completed.
“The award will be used towards the cost of the installation of emergency lighting and improvements to the fire exit doors and routes in our St Joseph’s
Church, in Winshill.”
Grants of between £100 and £5,000 are handed out every three months to a wide range of applicants.
The fund guarantees that at least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help projects to thrive across its trading area of 16 counties from the Midlands to the east coast.
Martyn Cheatle, Chief Executive of Central England Co-operative, said: “I would like to urge all of our members to get in touch and put forward a community cause close to their heart for the Community Dividend scheme.”

Potential applicants have to have been a Central England Co-operative member for six months, the project should be in the trading area of a Central England
Co-operative store and all applications will need a referee.
