Making a difference
As part of the Co-operative Group, we lead the way in terms of ethics, social responsibility and the environment and we are committed to making a real difference. This means helping you enjoy your leisure time to the full, whilst making your holiday kinder to the environment. Here are some organisations we are working with.
As a responsible tour operator, we’re committed to and support the sustainable travel programme Travelife. Travelife is a sustainable standard system governing the way the suppliers in our holiday supply chain manage their operations. It is a standard backed by ABTA, FTO and the EU and we are working hard with our hoteliers to encourage them to work to these standards. Over the coming months we’ll be working very hard to raise these standards even further.
This UK charity supports the environment, community and cultures in destinations worldwide, by investing in sustainable tourism initiatives. Recent projects supported by The Travel Foundation include training for young unemployed Sri Lankan women in a village badly affected by the 2004 tsunami, and helping communities in the Maya province of Mexico to earn an income through the production of local merchandise.
Because of the support we’ve committed to give The Travel Foundation, we are now working on the development of our own dedicated project supporting a local community in Turkey. The aim of this new project, is to support local hoteliers source their produce locally.
The Co-operative Group has worked with Climate Care since 2000 to offset carbon dioxide emissions from the activities of its customers and its business operations. Climate Care is an organisation that funds projects to offset carbon emissions in the developing world – by either absorbing (for example, through planting trees) or avoiding (for example, through being more energy efficient) equivalent amounts of greenhouse gases.
Carbon offset projects funded by The Co-operative Group include:
The replanting of over 230 hectares of rainforest in Uganda.
The forest is now home to a thriving population of chimpanzees and twelve more endangered species. As the trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and lock it away to, the building of household biogas systems to provide renewable energy cooking fuel around Ranthambore National Park in India. Ranthambore is one of the world’s largest tiger reserves, but the illegal gathering of wood for cooking is putting the tiger’s habitat under threat and the wood burning releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
