Co-operative staff dig deep to help spruce up the National Memorial Arboretum

A national centre for remembrance was given a spring clean thanks to the hard work of staff from Central England Co-operative.

A total of 13 workers from the Lichfield-based Society swapped their suits for gardening gloves and work boots as part of a special day of volunteering at the National Memorial Arboretum, in Alrewas.

The group spent the day clearing weeds, planting new bulbs and cutting grass, plants and shrubs at the Burma Star Association’s memorial.

This part of the remembrance project celebrates the men and women who served in the Burma campaign from 1941 to 1945.

Jo Baldock, who was part of volunteering group, said: “We wanted to enhance the grounds at the National Memorial Arboretum as they rely on volunteers to support the upkeep

“The weather was good – only a little bit of rain - and we managed to fill an entire skip full of items we had cleared away.”

The National Memorial Arboretum is dedicated to honouring all those people who have served, and continue to serve, the nation in many different ways.

It has over 300 dedicated memorials which acknowledge the personal sacrifices made by the Armed Forces and civil services.
